Yell Staff Spotlight: Maria Bowtell, Team Manager, Scarborough

Maria Bowtell is a Team Manager at our Scarborough office who joined Yell in 2014. She started as a Digital Specialist and quickly progressed into her current role as a team manager. I caught up with Maria to find out about her Yell journey and her working life at our Scarborough contact centre.

Why did you choose a career at Yell?

Historically, I worked in face-to-face and telephone-based customer service roles. When I decided to return to work after two and a half years at home with my little boy, I wanted to work for a company which was customer centric and Yell was the perfect option for me.

Digital Marketing was also an area that I could see was expanding and, with my career history in Customer Service roles, it seemed a good opportunity to both learn and use the skills I already had.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

Now I am a team manager I can make a massive impact on my colleagues and team members and how they care for each and every one of their customers.

By encouraging and supporting my team, advising when improvements can be made and making them feel valued, it makes Yell a good place to be and feels less like work and more like a family.

Tell me about your career journey with us

I started at Yell as a Digital Specialist and thoroughly loved the role. In 2015 an opportunity arose for me to join a Customer Care project and I jumped at the chance. It allowed me to work with other teams and I experienced the broader expertise of Yell. Within this secondment I fell in love with working at Yell even more, which I didn’t think was possible.

When my secondment ended I applied for a role as Team Manager and was successful. As a Team Manager I have the ability to build working relationships with our Digital Specialists in Scarborough, both new and existing. I am able to see their progression and support them as I was supported when I started and help them to be the best they can be.

If you had to describe your journey in one word what would it be?

What is your proudest moment so far since joining Yell?

I feel like it is still to come and I’m looking forward to that.

Any advice for someone thinking of joining Yell in Scarborough?

Build relationships with your colleagues, support and keep each other motivated and always give your best. The people here are great, supportive, diverse and helpful. Our team is more like a community than an office which makes me smile everyday.
