Sham Hussain is a Digital Business Development Manager at Yell. An experienced digital marketing professional, he has been with Yell for 17 years. Sham currently looks after the Central and London region for Yell Agency – our specialist team of digital experts who deliver bespoke client marketing services.

In this Staff Spotlight, Yell Careers speaks to Sham about his sales career at Yell, his passion for digital marketing and his other life as a photographer.

How did you get in to sales?

I started my career in a senior customer support role in our national accounts team in 1999.  I had the opportunity to work with some large brands, including Direct Line, and some large London-based agencies. I was visiting these clients on a regular basis. A few years into the role I was encouraged by a Key Account Manager to apply for a sales role – and the rest is history.  I never looked back and have continued to progress. I’m now working in the Yell Agency in a senior role. 

What attracted you to working at Yell?

After graduating with a Genetics degree from Queen Mary University of London, I ideally wanted to work for a reputable locally-based company.  Career prospects were not great in science back then so I needed an alternative. Living a few minutes from the Slough office made Yell a great option. At the time, there were senior roles available that were aimed at graduates with good potential for the future. I’m glad I applied, as here I am 17 years later.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My role is to help train our sales teams in and around Central London, supporting account managers in unlocking additional digital premium revenue. This includes SEO, e-commerce, web development, PPC, display advertising and social media.

I help in winning new accounts through a data-driven approach and ensuring first-class customer experience and ROI throughout. I have a passion for digital marketing and have always shared best practice and knowledge with my colleagues and clients.  This has helped me build a reputation as a digital specialist with a different approach.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Yell?

Yell has always provided a great platform to develop my skills.  Recently, I graduated with a Google Squared Online Certificate – the digital marketing course developed with Google.  I am perfectly positioned to help my clients grow and develop with these new skills, being confident that we use best in class practice.

How do you feel your role at Yell lets you show your skills or interests?

Yell is a great platform for anyone to develop their career. I have been fortunate enough to have experienced working in senior marketing, change management and customer services roles.  Along the way I have met some amazing people and gained valuable insight into our business.

What do you do when you’re not working?

Outside of work, I have a particular interest in photography. I specialise in wedding and event photography and have my own online photography portfolio where you can see my work. Most recently I shot photos of the Yell team at The Business Show 2016 in The Olympia, London and the Google Ignite Event at Google HQ.

Do you have any advice for anyone else who might want to get into field sales?

Give it a go, you will love it.  Think about it, Yell is now one of the largest if not the largest digital marketing agency in the UK. We are currently going through a big transformation and you will have a chance to make your mark and help steer us to success.

What’s some of your favourite places, or businesses, to visit in your region, and why?

The Royal Nawaab – it’s a bright, spacious Indian buffet restaurant in London, based in a unique art deco building. I also like the Kashmiri Karahi in Slough, which has authentic Indian cuisine and is available for events.
